unseen cover exam practise

Masthead:
The masthead is the word 'billboard' and has used a bold and large font to really catch the eye as a reader, they have also created the masthead in a pink/red colour as that would attract their target audience which is females of the ages 14-25 and of a British ethnicity. Although they have put the main masthead behind the picture of the celebrity which makes the word stand out however you can't fully read what it says.

Colour Pallet:
The colour pallet consists of three main colours which are reds, white and black. These colours make the picture and writing stand out, this also attracts the target audience because they are grown up sophisticated colours which contrast and blend well with the picture. The colour pallet also produces the a look and process of the magazine and gives the magazine a nice look at an eye catching cover which would make you want to buy it.

Imagery/muse-en-scene:
The image that has been used is of Ariana Grande and the muse-en-scene is a very rich and pretentious look as she is only in a white towel although she has got a lot of diamond jewellery on and she is also wearing a pair of white Chanel sunglasses, this is proceeding the idea of a celebrities lifestyle which is very rich and glamorous. This could also contribute to the Laura Mulvey theory which is arguing that woman are 'erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience'.

Typography/Lexis:
The typography is sophisticated and a very classic font with a slight cursive look to the font the colours of the font also are red, white and black. There is very minimal writing on the magazine and the font of the writing is very small so it makes the picture look a lot larger than what it is.

sound essay- 'if I were a boy'

PEEL paragraph- 'if I were a boy'
Diegetic and non-diegetic sound is used in Beyonce's song 'if I were a boy' to attract the target audience (female, 15-25+, straight, mixed race) this is used in a number of different ways throughout the lyrics and music video.

The lyrics 'Go drink beers with the guys' 'I'd kick it with who I wanted, And i'd never get confronted for it cause they'd stick up for me' This is a Gauntlett theory and within his theory he says 'alpha males who control the action with violence' this is shown because of he's going to drink beers with the guys which is a very manly and alpha males and he could kick with who he wanted and no one would confront him because he has this alpha male characteristics and people would stick up for him.

Secondly, the lyrics 'And chase after girls' and 'cause he's taken you for granted' Is the Laura Mulvey theory and within the Laura Mulvey theory she says 'Erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience' this is shown in this quotation because it is saying how males chase after girls and that males take girls for granted this is showing women are erotic objects for males because its saying how girls are so easily chased and taken for granted.

sound essay- uptown funk

uptown funk PEEL paragraph-
Diegetic and non dietetic sound is used in the song 'uptown funk' by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars is used to attract the target audience (Female and males, 15-24+ year olds, mixed race, straight) in a number of ways.

The lyrics 'them hood girls, them good girls, straight masterpieces' is an example of Laura Mulveys theory and within her theory she says women in the media are seen as 'erotic objects of desire for males on screen and in the audience.' this is seen throughout this music video and song quite a lot. The word 'masterpieces' suggests that the women are perfect and stunning. The diegetic and non-diegetic sound is proven of this theory as the lyrics are sexualising women.

The lyrics 'get chucks on with saint laurent gotta kiss myself I'm so pretty' is an example of Mackillons theory and his theory suggests 'males are now shown as sexual objects of desire who are more concerned with image' this is proven in these lyrics and in the music video as well as the media. the quote 'get chucks on with saint laurent' is showing how males should have designer clothing to improve their image and how males are supposedly meant to have money and have a presentable image in todays society.

'if i were a boy' analysis

If i were a boy lyrics-

color code for representation theory-
Laura Mulvey
Gauntlett
Mackillon

[Verse 1]
If I were a boy
Even just for a day
I'd roll outta bed in the morning
And throw on what I wanted and go
Drink beer with the guys

And chase after girls
I'd kick it with who I wanted
And I'd never get confronted for it
Cause they'd stick up for me

[Chorus 1]
If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I'd be a better man
I'd listen to her
Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted
Cause he's taken you for granted
And everything you had got destroyed

[Verse 2]
If I were a boy
I would turn off my phone
Tell everyone it's broken
So they'd think that I was sleepin' alone
I'd put myself first
And make the rules as I go
Cause I'd know that she'd be faithful
Waitin' for me to come home
To come home

[Chorus 1]
If I were a boy
I think I could understand
How it feels to love a girl
I swear I’d be a better man
I’d listen to her
Cause I know how it hurts
When you lose the one you wanted (wanted)
Cause he’s taken you for granted (granted)
And everything you had got destroyed

[Bridge]
It's a little too late for you to come back
Say it's just a mistake
Think I'd forgive you like that
If you thought I would wait for you
You thought wrong

[Chorus 2]
But you’re just a boy
You don’t understand
Yeah you don’t understand
How it feels to love a girl someday
You'll wish you were a better man
You don’t listen to her
You don’t care how it hurts
Until you lose the one you wanted
Cause you’ve taken her for granted
And everything you have got destroyed
But you’re just a boy...

class

Richard Putsch says the males in the media are presented as "Incompetent and ineffectual, often a buffoon, well-intentioned but dumb. In almost all working-class series, the male is flawed, some more than others."

old age/disability

Evans states: "disable people are seen as childish, dependant and underdeveloped and are regarding as 'other' and are punished by being excluded from ordinary life. Thus popular images and rhetoric of disabled people abound which comfort us with people who are imperfect, helpless, disgusting, shitty, dribbling - a threat to rigid ego boundaries"

youth stereotypes

Stanley Hall said that:
1)The common mood of teenagers is a state of depression.
2)criminal activity increases between the ages of 12 & 24.
3)Young people are extreme and need excitement; "youth must have excitement and if this is not at hand in the form of moral intellectual enthusiasms it is more prone to be sought in;sex, drink or drugs"

sexuality stereotypes

the lesbian stereotype is that they are butch and wear manly clothes and have short hair such as  however that is not true as many lesbians are not like that such as Bella Thorne. Although within the pop industry if you are gay or lesbian you are treated differently .

The gay stereotype is for men to be very feminine such as Frankie Grande.

ethnicity/race stereotype

As you can see from the screenshot from google most of our fashion magazines are consistantly of white females, as you can see there is no black women on the covers so that proves how racially divided our magazine covers are.

Although the content for rap magazines all the covers consist of black males, As you can see below there is no white males on the covers even though there are many white rappers.

These both show how races are put into categories and even though our society has come a long way with racial divide we still have these categories that races are put into.

mojo cover analysis

This magazine cover is for a specific type of magazine and music.
The age of the audience- teenager+
The gender- is mainly for male
The social grade- C1
ethnicity- United kingdom
interests- sells for £4.99 an issue

The masthead:
The word in the masthead is MOJO. is covered by a singers face which is in my opinion is inconvenient due to the fact you cannot see what the title of the magazine is although the writing is in bold font but you cannot see this. The colour of the masthead is white so it creates a bold presence and it stands out on the blue background. The colours attract the audience because it stands out although i think they could have chosen a bolder colour.

Colour pallet:
The colours within the colour pallet is yellow, red, orange, white, grey, blue and black. These colours connote because they are all bight and bold colours to make the magazine stand out to the audience. These colours draws people in because they are bight and vibrant and the colours represent the audience as a fun audience.

Layout:
The layout of the magazine is a stylish yet fun and outgoing, the words are big and take up a lot of the page. This connotes the magazine content as a fun and outgoing sources and information within the magazine and it isn't a heavy or factual magazine.

Images:
The main image is a close up shot of Dave Grohl as he is the mail focus of this issue. The              mies-en-scene in the image is a casual outfit and the lighting is very harsh on his face so you can see how he looks and his facial expression is a very serious yet kind of a smile look. The main image attracts the audience because it has a picture of a famous singer on it. There is 2 other images on the cover and the 2 other images are both long shots and one of them shows a man singing on a stage whereas the other one is of peoples hands and arms at a concert. The minor images attracts people because it shows people having a good time and makes the magazine seem more interesting.

Teasers/typograohy/lexis:
The language on the magazine is quite informal and quite simple as it uses number instead of letters as you can tell by this quote from the magazine cover 'Nirvana reading '92' '25 years on the survivors speak'. The language tells us the content of the magazine is quite simple to read and easy to understand. The punctuation on the cover is rather poor and simple as you can see by this 'The songs that saved his life...' this could attract readers because its easy and simplistic to understand.

Other features:
On the cover is some other types of writing, a bar code, date and issue number. These features aren't very big because it would take the focus off the main image and main features and the audience would prefer to see the main focus' rather than those little features who the average person doesn't take any notice of.

analysing music videos

Yungen-Bestie
Yungen's bestie music video is based purely in the desert apart from a few scenes when it is based in a city and he has a casual outfit to wear during the music video.
You can see this all throughout the video.
There are moments within the video when it flashes from scene to scene as in one second it will be in the desert and then within a second it will transition to the city, the transitions are veery smooth and you cannot even tell that there was editing done to the video. You can also see how many times they changed their outfits throughout the video. They kept the outfits pretty simple and casual.
As for Yungen's sound he has used some auto-tune but the auto tune isn't very noticeable and he has used a lot of beat drops to create the rapper/grime effect and you can tell this throughout the video.
As for the music video the camera angles change very limited amount of times it only moves from close up to extreme close up and normal.
The target audience for this music video i would say is teenagers both boys and girls.

music magazine annotations

I have created a pop genre magazine. The primary target audience is for female teenagers between the ages 15-18+. I am trying to represent through my media language is
Gender: Female
Age:14-18+
Ethnicity: British, American, Australian, Canadian
Social grade: B (upper class)
Interests: celebrities, music, entertainment

P1: Masthead
.The word 'icon' is in the masthead.
.The word connotes the genre and the target audience because its big, bold, has colour and has a eye capturing font.
.The typography style i have used is savoye LET this attracts people because it has a very safisticated look to the letters.
.The colour used for the masthead is a light/pale pink they connote a girly look about it so it will attract females especially.

P2:Colour pallet
.There is two colours which is white and a light/pale pink.
.The colours connote a welcoming feel and a famine look about it.
.The colours represent  a fashion and music look about it.

P3:Layout
.The layout looks like a music magazine with a fashion feel to it.
.This layout connotes the magazine content because its telling people how it is a music magazine for primarily females.

P4:images
.The main shot type is from the angle medium close up and it shows sofie who is a rising pop star.
.The mise-en-scene is very much casual the lighting is not to harsh and the image is in black and white and the outfit is a normal everyday outfit.
.The main image attracts people because its formal and not many magazines look like this one.

P5:Teasers/typography/lexis
.The photo i have used creates a teaser because it creates appeal.
.The language on the magazine is sophisticated and formal as you can see by this 'a completely new style and genre, interview inside'.
.The choice of language shows that the magazine is aimed at people of an older age, its saying the content is for adults and teenagers not for young children.
.Some punctuation that has been used is explanation marks.

P6:Other features
.On the cover there is also a bar code, price and date.
.These features are quite small as i didn't want them invading the space of actual writing.
.They are quite a small size so the reader can focus more on the actual writing and text.
